The Art of the Slow Cure: Our Process

Handcrafted in Kentucky. Perfected Underground.

At Hartstone, we don’t rush perfection. By combining artisanal hand-casting techniques with a unique underground curing environment, we create concrete elements that offer unparalleled strength and a timeless, organic aesthetic.

The Workflow

Step 1: The Proprietary Blend (Raw Materials)

Every tile begins with our signature “recipe.” We use a high-performance blend of the finest Portland cement, crushed limestone, and natural mineral pigments. Unlike mass-produced tiles, our mix is designed for high density and low water absorption, ensuring your stone lasts for generations.

Step 2: Artisanal Hand-Casting (The Pour)

We don’t use assembly lines. Each piece is hand-poured into custom-sculpted molds. Our artisans carefully vibrate the molds to eliminate air pockets and ensure a crisp, structural edge. This “wet-cast” method allows for the rich, variegated textures that define the Hartstone look.

Step 3: The Deep Cure (The Secret Sauce)

This is the Hartstone difference. We move our tiles deep into a former limestone mine to cure. This environment maintains a constant 56–58°F temperature and perfect humidity levels year-round. This slow, natural “hydration” process allows the concrete to reach maximum PSI strength without the internal stresses caused by rapid outdoor drying.

Step 4: Refinement & Inspection

Once cured, every tile is hand-inspected for quality and color consistency. We hand-tool the edges and surfaces to ensure they meet our architectural standards. If a tile doesn’t meet our “Touch System” criteria for excellence, it doesn’t leave the shop.

Why It Matters

Extreme Durability

Because of our slow underground cure, our tiles handle freeze-thaw cycles better than standard concrete.

Organic Beauty

Hand-casting creates subtle variations in color and texture that "breathe" with your space.

Sustainable Longevity

We use natural materials and a low-energy curing process to create a product that won't need replacing for decades.

Tailored to Your Vision

Your project shouldn’t be limited by a catalog. From bespoke dimensions and custom color matching to unique architectural elements like hearthstones and pool coping, our artisans work directly with you to bring your specific design to life. If your vision requires a shape, size, or shade beyond the standard, we have the mold-making expertise to cast it to your exact specifications.
